Why I Secretly Love Wand Curls More Than Flexi Rods

I'm a huge fan of flexi rods. They're easy, convenient, and super versatile.  Pretty much any type of curl is duplicatable simply by switching up the technique used to set the hair.  And let's not forget how these bendable curlers are a healthier heat-free option.

There's nothing bad I can say about them.  Yet, deep down inside, I still have lots of love for the almighty wand curl.  I took the plunge and acquired a curling wand set a couple of years ago after watching video tutorial.

My first experience was darn near perfect.  As a leftie, I had to first get comfortable with holding the wand in a way that creates my desired outcome. Once I got that part down, it was smooth sailing from then on.

The curls came out beautifully, but it was what happened next that blew me away.
I remember it like it was yesterday.  Prior to enjoying a mini-getaway to South Beach, I decided to use my curl wand for the very first time.  The curls came out flawlessly (smooth and defined)and I didn't have to use a high heat setting to get the results I wanted. I also noticed that my curls seemed to have extra volume, which I absolutely loved.

More importantly, these magical wand curls perfectly held up to the sweltering heat and the 100% humidity of a Miami summer.  I was stunned. That morning, I created beautiful curls (using no holding products) and by evening, my hair remained very much in tact.  Although I didn't use any holding products, I still remembered to implement my heat styling healthy hair protocol.

Flexi Rods could never give me similar results.  Sure, the curls might look decent after styling, but it doesn't take long before humidity starts to compromise my hard work.  Curling wands, on the other hand, have the ability to seal the cuticle layer, preventing moisture from transforming my beautiful, luscious curls into a frizzy mess.

My curling wand won't let that happen and that's why I love it.  Plus....curling wands differ in design from flexi rods.  The tapered shape of the curl want creates a slightly different result.  In my opinion, the tapered design provides a more looking natural curl. Exibit A is the image used at the top of this post. If you look closely, you may notice that her curls shrink in size at the ends.   It's not a huge difference but I notice it.  Flexi rods tend to give you a uniform sized curl throughout.

 I still tend to reach for my flexi-rods more often than not.  I'm fully aware of how easy they are to use and they're truly a healthier styling option.  Logically, flexi rods make complete sense. Which is why I shouldn't be so conflicted.  But, the truth is, wand curls will always have a special place in my heart.
